Site Visit & Installation
A small, busy warehousing and logistics company agreed to run a pilot with RackWatch in their bonded warehouse near Heathrow Airport.
After an initial site visit, it was determined that the whole warehouse could be monitored with 48 sensors and a single gateway.
The sensors were manufactured, flashed, configured and then the gateway and sensors were installed which took just under 2 hours to complete the installation.
After collecting data for a few months, a meeting was set up with the management team to go through the RackWatch system, demonstrate the data collected and explain the insights the data was delivering.
Incident Log
Prior to the management meeting, a critical incident had occurred in the early hours of that day.
RackWatch showed that rack A had been hit so hard, that the whole rack moved, setting off all the other sensors on rack A, and then shortly afterwards a sensor on rack B was triggered. This is indicated by the traffic light impact system on the floor plan, with the dark red icon indicating the critical impact location on the rack.
The Compliance and Safety Manager, checked the warehouse CCTV for the time of the incident. He confirmed that a forklift had hit the rack, causing it to move and then reversed into the rack behind.
This incident was not reported by the driver, contravening the company’s Health & Safety policy regarding racking impacts!
Impact Reductions
Analysing the data from the previous 30 days, the night shift caused 500% more critical incidents than the day shift, effectively putting the day shift drivers at risk because none of these incidents were reported.
The management team quickly realised how RackWatch was enabling them to understand exactly what was going on the in their warehouse, and that warehouse operatives could not be relied upon to comply with the company’s Health & Safety policies.
Over 5 months of monitoring:-
- Critical incidents reduced by 88%
- Severe incidents by 70%
- High severity incidents by 50%
An increase was observed in the July due to agency staff covering driver holidays, and not being informed about the rack monitoring. Normal levels returned the following month.
